I saw the wedding crashers film the other day and thought that would be a good way to get experience and a few cheeky shots. Has anyone done this or got any advice?

Maybe a loop hole in the market funerals. Lol, Gotta have the nuggets to do it though. Maybe that's a job for the paps.
When I was first training one of the guys I worked with used to just pop up at chuches and ask to do a few photos. Much to the annoyance of the pro photographer paid to cover the wedding. Brides and grooms often bought a few of his shots and he grew a portfolio to start with. Not my cup of tea but it can be done. This was back in the day when everyone was working on film still and not the mass of digitals that float about today. The main thing is to look after the bride and grooms big day!

as a wedding photographer for 20 years I seriously discourage that kind of action! it's rude, reprehensible and just down right not proper.

1 - you are invading someone's private party (aka crasher)

2 - you're stepping on the pro's toes in a market that is already super hard to get jobs and get orders. You could be literally taking food of his table or clothes off his/her kid's backs

3 - selling photos - over the top. I knew of one guy that did that here in my city and everyone in the industry hated him. It's very poor business practices and if this is an industry you want to get into you need to make friends with the other pros not alienate them.

4 - if you plan on showing those shots to potential brides that is false advertising and trickery.

so if you are okay with those things ethically and can sleep at night, go ahead and do it. If you have integrity and wouldn't like the same trick played on you once you get some paying jobs - find another way. Call a local pro and offer to assist him/her for free to hang out and ask if you can shoot a few photos. Who knows they may even want to use your images and show the couple. However, be prepared to give the studio your files as they are the ones contracted by the couple not you. Don't expect to make money on it - just go to learn.
