Lightning isn't as tricky as you think to photograph. Hardest part is finding the storms and being in the right place. If the lightning is flashing infrequently you can just set the shutter speed for the longest time length. (usually 30 secs) when the lightning flashes then it'll do all the work for you. Tripod is a must though. If it's flashing fast it's more tricky but just set your shutter speed to a smaller time frame (1 or 2 seconds) and same thing the lightning will do the work for you. Hope that helps. Happy shooting!
You must adjust your aperture too. And don't shoot on any programme or auto setting. You must set it on manual. Try f8 and about 4-5 secs in dark conditions. You'll be surprised how powerful the lightining brightness is when you capture it. Sometimes you may need to go to f16. It depends on the storm and the time period within that storm as to what setting you need. You could choose 50 secs then keep you hand over the lens and try to pop it off when you see the lightning if you are quick and it lasts long enough you can get several lightning flashes on one frame in different parts of the sky.
