Hello all! I wanted to get some advice about enrolling in a Photography degree program. I am considering enrolling in an Art school to get a degree in Photography. It's a huge decision and I am wondering if adding another student loan to my ever growing current one is the right move to make. I love photography and within the past year I have started to notice my photos going from candid snapshots at parties and family gatherings to more thought-out artistic shots. What kind of money can I really make as a professional. Something to keep in mind when providing your advice is that I am into every type of photography.

How would you go about things? Any advice is helpful

So many degree photographers we use come out with a small knowledge of business so if you want to get in the photography business then major in business .. a 4 yr program in photography is spread way to thin with non photography classes to justify the cost .. that's my opinion. However, if you don't know how to run a business .. well it doesn't matter if your the best photographer in the world .. you will fail without knowing how to be the boss.

Personally I'd suggest asking other photographers if you can assist them. It will teach you all you need without the heafty student debts that you can avoid.
Also use the web. These days it's the dogs nuts for learning. Sorry excuse the language. It's very good.

In this day and age you can avoid the student loan. Built your portfolio up then pound the beat of all studios near you. Offer to do free work/help to get foot in the door and you'd be surprised how quick you can prove yourself to be part of the team and start earning.

I totally agree with 7oaks on the business experience. You can be the best shooter in the world and fail at business because you lack that knowledge. I've seen it many times in my 22 years in the biz.

I am however a grad of a 2 yr photography program. Would I do it again - not sure? tuitions are so high now and there are other great ways to learn. There is so much on the internet but if you join any online classes just make sure there is teacher/student interaction and you can get your worked critiqued . Get the technical stuff down (exposure, composition, lighting, post processing, etc) then you need to learn or work on other skills like:
    - customer relations
    - marketing
    - handing people and groups
    - being personable and getting the expressions you want from your clients
    - dealing with kids and pets
    - accounting
    - branding
    - promotions
    - networking

as for income - most photographers I know make less than $40,000 a year. happy with that? don't do it for the money - if you get in for that reason you'll be done in less than 5 years. if you wanna do it because you love it then go for it.
