I've been told I should have a UV filter for each and every lens. Why do I need them? What will happen if I don't have them? What kind of cash will I have to spend on them?

Hi Keith, Uv filters will balance the extreme contrast between light in a shot or scene. If you watch car programs or have seen car photography the sky can look very blue with good contast/exposure with exposure on the car being spot on as well. This is due to the filters compensting it. Me personally I save the expense and use photoshop to do the work for me and adjust an area if there's extreme light ranges in an image. Hope that helps a bit.
    Try www.warehouseexpress.com for cheap filters.

Thanks 7oaks - I've just bought a couple of polarising filters for different lenses that I'm using. They are variable by turning and I can certainly see what you are saying. It's great fun playing with these things. I can get beter pics of the sky now and the sea can look entirely different using different settings.
    Thanks again.

Filters also protect your front lens glass.
